Why are Republicans caving into Obama on the debt ceiling?

If you know me from my previous questions, I’m very mad at the Democratic Party for jeopardizing our nation’s future. But it seems the Republican party is going down the wrong path, caving into President Obama. Mitch McConnell wants to let Obama raise the debt ceiling, no questions asked.

I’m 14, but at least I know some common sense. Isn’t the purpose of a debt ceiling to cap the amount of debt our country is facing? Talk is made about spending cuts, but any spending cut Obama proposes is just smoke and mirrors(setting "goals" for reducing the growth of spending, not actually cutting it, drawing money from accounts that wouldn’t be spent anyway, etc.).
The government has maxed out on its credit card, thanks to the Democrats. In 2010, the American people spoke very clearly: it is time for Republicans to lead to defeat Obama’s reckless agenda. Now, Democrats are trying to advance scare tactics that we will default on our debts. The treasury gets nearly 3 trillion dollars a year to finance the nanny state created by Democrats. We can pay our interest, social security checks, medicare checks, etc. if we didn’t raise the debt ceiling. There will have to be severe cuts to spending, but that will stimulate economic growth and restore confidence about America’s fiscal future.
Please, Republicans, I’m begging you, the time is NOW to defeat Obama. Don’t budge one bit until:
-You have a balanced budget amendment.
-Spending is permanently capped.
-Corporate tax rates slashed(this would provide a tremendous stimulus to the economy and could provide a revenue boost with the influx of businesses into the nation)
-Entitlement programs are overhauled(privatize Social security/Medicare, raise retirement age, and use need testing)
-America has a set track to REDUCE the debt, not reduce the debt’s growth. Again, we can’t start reducing the debt until we have a balanced budget.
If an American is out of work(thanks to Obama’s job-killing policies), he/she can’t spend as much as they want on their credit. And if they are in debt, they need to cut their expenditures: reduce bills such as cable by downgrading plans, shopping less, cooking more at home, and buying store brands. The government needs to cut back. And Democrats want to raise taxes, holding the debate hostage! Raising taxes in a recession is bad for the economy. It restricts the engine of job creation and less jobs means less revenue. Cutting taxes means more money is put into the economy. Economic stimulus spurs job creation. When more people have jobs, more pay taxes, meaning more revenue. Talking about "taxing the rich" is just socialism and class warfare. Give me a break, Obama. Americans spoke in 2010.
I wish Republicans had a spine. In 2010, I thought we could see another Reagan Revolution, yet the party’s leaders are so concerned about making a deal, Obama’s the one in power. It’s time for a change. And to Democrats, why do you want to harm my future? At 14, I’m nervous about the coutnry’s future under Obama’s helm. We need major reforms before its too late. When will Republicans get some spine? (By the way, Club for Growth had an awesome ad on this-I love Club for Growth. They will help put America on a better path.)
The thing is, Americans know Obamanomics didn’t work from the 2010 midterms. We need to spur the economy by cutting spending. Then, we need a massive campaign to remind Americans Republicans are the reason we have prosperity.

Republicans have a lot of leverage-they need to use it.

Your a very bright and promising young person. Please keep your interest level
high, and keep participating. Thank you for this will proffered question. The
Majority of Independents are opposed to the debt ceiling increase, same for the
Republican and Conservative base. So I like you and concerned we are leaning in
a direction that makes no sense. We have the ball and we are on the 1 yard line.

Put our best running back in the game, and win at all cost. Strike Obama dead in
the running lights. Show this cheap trick of a President that he can know longer
strut and shuffle his way around issues, For he has been found out,

  2. Dr. Killpatient Says:

Republicans created the whole debt limit mess to try to harm Obama politically, but they only manage to harm themselves. They are looking for a face saving way out of the mess, but there may not be one.

  3. Gee Wally Says:

Most of the GOP’s base are retirees that are on Social Security and Medicare. You do the math.

  4. Makawao Says:

Because it is a horrible mistake that they know will be clearly evident come election time. They are giving him enough rope to hang himself (metaphorically).

  5. Bill G VII Says:

If they quit this time when they have the idiot on the ropes it will be the last time ever for me.

Keep the pressure on. This shattered economy is his fault and he needs to be made to pay the price for it.

  6. Democrat with Backbone Says:

Wimps. Vote ‘em out and get Democrats in there.

    It’s what they do.

Whenever Dems and Repubs do anything together, rest assured the middle class is getting screwed.

  9. Ieatlibsforbreakfastandmywifefordessert Says:

Mitch McConnels plan is a good one. It puts 100% of the economys downfall on the democrats. And forces Obama to make his budget plan and forces him to make cuts. Don’t rule it out til you read it.
And remember when Obama’s budget plan went up in flames in the senate? It is because his plan raises taxes and no democrat would dare raise taxes in this economy right now.
It forces Dems to side with the Reps against Obama. It is a WIN WIN. Read the plan.

  10. YB Logical Says:

There is another way to look at it.
As a conservative’s conservative, I love what Obama is doing to the Democratic Party.
I only wish that the Republicans in Congress would just step aside and tell the American people that they refuse to stand in the way of allowing Obama to fulfill his agenda.
    Let him tax.
    Let him spend.
Then, He and the Democrats would have no one to blame for his failures.
He only has another 18 months in office, which is time enough for him to totally devastate the Democratic Party.
Yes, we would all suffer a bit more, but it would be well worth it in order to prove how incompetent and inept Obama really is.
The voters would lose all confidence in him and the Democrats, then turn to the conservatives to repair the damage, guaranteeing wins for the Office of Presidency and both Houses of Congress for years to come.
I say, give the fool some more rope.

  11. CREAM OF NOTHING Says:

    Look kid

you don’t get to be Mitch McConnell, unless you’re a shrewd, crafty, sophisticated player

and if its such a good deal for Obama, why doesn’t he take it

because the Republicans are toying with Obama, much like a cat toys with a mouse, before killing it

Mitch has been a DC power broker for 40 years who clawed his way to the top – Obama is an affirmative action wanabe who is way, way, way, out of his league

  12. Alex Says:

First, Republicans aren’t caving. There is no way that Obama will get tax hikes, especially with the new GOP freshmen in the house that ran on the basis of not allowing tax hikes.

Second, McConnell’s plan comes with spending cuts but is mainly a blame-game plan. He’s counting on the fact that if Obama raises the debt ceiling against a majority of the American people’s will, then all the blame for the continuous tanking of the economy will be on Obama, destroying his chances for re-election.

I don’t agree with McConnell because I think the economy should be the number one issue, not focusing blame, even though it’s Obama’s fault that he broke his promise of reducing the nation’s debt in half by the end of his first term (instead he increased it by 40%).

However, I applaud you for taking an interest in politics at age 14.

  13. wdx2bb Says:

A few facts for you, in no particular order:

The Senate and House split legislative responsibilities, while the President signs bills. There will be no second Reagan Revolution with the Democratic Party controlling two of those three elements.

Compromise is not a bad thing. It happens all the time in politics. The Republicans had a chance to call Obama out on his promise to make a large deal, one that would have had a 3 to 1 ratio of spending cuts to tax hikes. They passed on it. Oh well, an opportunity lost.

Circumstances change. A balanced budget amendment would be avoided whenever necessary whenever it struck the whim of the Congress at the moment. It would have to have some sort of clause that would include a suspension of the rule during a national emergency. But what’s that? Anything Congress says it is. Remember, it is their job to say that things are in a crisis and that we need immediate action. Otherwise, what do Congressmen do?

Remember in 2008, when the economy tanked? All you heard about was jobs, jobs, jobs. That’s how the stimulus bill passed. It obviously had an effect on unemployment — no matter how high it, it would be worse without, no matter what some think — so now the deficit is the story of the day. Both sides have a horrible track record on this issue, but threatening to not lift the debt ceiling is rather irresponsible. It’s always been a bookkeeping measure in the past, and to fool with the chance of default is insanity.

I appreciate your interest and concerns, and I share many of them. But there are many ways to a better country, not just one.

  14. JOE Says:

Young man you need to check your brain before you write this nonsense or else as you have done here you have shown you don’t know what you are taking about, the great St. Ronald the conservative Savior raised the debt limit 18 time during his administration and he is looked up to as some kind of godly figure that could do no wrong and our previous President did it 9 times but all of a sudden it wrong because it is a democrat and not one of your boys that young man is hypocritical at the max

  15. sprowlindak Says:

The President and his Admin has already reversed the numbers in TRILLIONS given them in Jan 09. President Obama’s first term isn’t over for another year and a half … and don’t forget how many states are calling for a re-CALL since November’s elections won on false pretenses …

  16. jdman13 Says:

Your only 14, that is an impressive question for a 14 year old.

Obama is making the republicans look bad in this whole debate, americans seem to want a government that can work together. Republicans are trying to do the right thing but a man can only take so much criticism from our leader. I don’t remember bush EVER saying anything like, "democrats need to sit in the back of the bus". I don’t remember ANY president ever talking about the other party like that, not Clinton, Bush, or Reagan. I’m sorry for your future but I think republicans would do better to just sit this crap out, just let the dens do whatever they want and don’t stand in the way, then in 2012, hope for a good election year.

  17. conservative killer Says:

Because they know the debt ceiling has to be raised. Raising the debt ceiling isn’t a debate. They knew it had to be raised all along and they were just playing politics.
