   If the negative items on your credit report are legitimate, there is nothing you can do to remove them. They will remain for the balance of the 7 year reporting period whether paid, unpaid, or settled. Paying off derogatory items will not improve your score. However creditors look at your whole report and paid old debt looks better.

   You can negotiate settlements for 25% to 75% depending on how old the debt is. The older the debt, the smaller the settlement. Lump sum gets the best deals. Payment plans must be short term. Get any agreement in writing before you pay and don’t give the collector direct access to your bank account.

   You will also need to rebuild with open, current accounts. If you don’t have any, get a credit card, even if you have to get a secured card. Use the card and pay in full every month. You need at least 24 months of consistent, on time payment history to see improvement to your score.
