My wife was ill for a long and we fell behind on some payments. She finally succumbed to the cancer. So know I am left to pick up the pieces. Any help would be appreciated

These companies will charge you thousands for something you can easily do yourself.
Fixing credit reports is not brain surgery.
It is common knowledge.
Get a book at your bookstore called Credit Repair for Dummies – or something similar.
These books can help you negotiate, reduce payments, reduce interest rates, and even settle.
They even teach you how to do the pay on delete correctly on one time charges.
Please go get yourself a good book – and don’t let a company scam you into doing something that you can do yourself for free.
Also if some of these debts were in her name only – you may not have to pay them – oh yes, creditors will lie and tell you that you do – they work on commission and they can lie.
Research, research, reasearch it’s all in books and you can also ask here.

there are places that do credit counselling and they actually sit with you and review your situation and then determine the best possible way to get everything back in order.
Where do you live (what city?)
EDIT: the place I dealt with didn’t charge me a cent for their guidance – maybe it just depends where you go….
PS. So sorry to hear of your loss

I did not experience your misfortune but I was left to pick up the pieces through my own misadventures. I put together a lot of info here at http://www.thinkyourmoney.com to help those in the same situation. It is just a matter of putting the pieces back together and letting time heal the wounds. Like a Disney movie you will pick up friends who will help you in your struggle.

"Credit repair" firms have no special power to magically delete negative items….all they do is dispute all negative items on your credit report and hope that the credit bureaus cannot validate the debt. Accurate negative info stays for 7 years. If you’ve had recent defaults, charge-offs, late pays, then you need to understand that you’ll have bad credit for at least 2 years after these major events have happened as your credit rating is most heavily weighted on what’s occurred in the past 24 months. After that time you’re credit rating will start to go back up.
To help build (or rebuild) a good credit history, it can be beneficial to get a secured credit card, the kind where you put up a security deposit and your credit limit is equal to that. Carry a small balance and pay it off over time. You can use this to gradually rebuild a history of on-time payments that will be reported to the credit bureaus.
- Stay out of further financial trouble. Each new default creates a brand new cycle of bad credit that will last another 2 years.
- Pull your credit report and check for errors. Dispute anything that’s not correct. annualcreditreport.com is the real free site to check your credit file for free once a year without a credit card.

quite honestly, there is no company that can help you fix your credit…
what u need to do is pay the unpaid. there’s nothing to do about the past due.
i dunno how your debts are, how big or how past due but i can tell you that you can talk to all the banks you owe and negotiate settlements with them. i would normally recommend you go through a debt management program, but if you go to a debt management program it’ll report on your credit almost as if you filed for bankruptcy. its better for you to settle with the banks or the agencies. if your accounts are in a collection agency try to go as low are you possibly can to save yourself money..
